The Thistle, tile painting for the marquis of Veere, c. 1910, after C. Springer

The Amsterdam painter Cornelis Springer (1817-1891) was one of the most popular painters of historical buildings in the 19th century. In 1861, he painted the late-Gothic town hall of Veere, designed by the Flemish architect Keldermans. Springer's oil painting of this town hall, completed in 1517, was included in the collection of the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum. On loan to the Stedelijk Museum in Zutphen, the painting was lost in 1945 as a result of acts of war. What remained was a black-and-white photograph. The tile reproduction, probably painted by Willem van Norden c. 1910 at De Distel, is therefore the most reliable source to get an idea of the original colour scheme.
